The Best Advice You Could Ever Get About Moving House

Don’t leave it until the last minute: Just because you haven’t got your keys yet, doesn’t mean you can’t stop packing. Doing a little bit of packing once a week will make the few days before moving much easier. Start with rooms you use the least or the garage. You can start packing up boxes, and it won’t impact your daily life.

Careful labeling: Make sure that you pack all your fragile stuff together, wrapped in plenty of newspaper and bubble wrap. Everyone knows that when you move house, labeling boxes can make unpacking so much easier. What we don’t think about, though, is moving boxes straight into the right room. You can ask your removals company to put boxes for the bedrooms upstairs, and boxes for the garage straight outside. This will save your front room filling up with boxes, and more heavy lifting later.

Consider a two day move: Don’t feel pressured into moving everything in one day. As exciting as it is moving into your new home, don’t feel rushed. This isn’t always possible, but if you do get the chance then consider it. Take your time and spread it across a couple of days or even longer if necessary.

Don’t overload the box: When you’re packing, it’s easy to get carried away. You might feel like you’re doing great at carefully fitting your belongings in a box neatly. But rarely do we think about weight. Even if you’re not the one carrying the box, this is still something you need to consider. If you overload a cardboard box, it’ll collapse when you pick it up. Broken boxes can waste precious time, picking up your stuff from all over the road. It might even result in some of your things getting damaged or broken.

Young children and pets: If you have little ones or furry friends, consider asking a friend to look after them on moving day. Babies and pets can end up getting in the way, and it might even be dangerous for them. You’ll get much more done, not having to worry about children running out the front door, feeding babies or stepping on pets. Make sure they are safe and collect them after you’ve moved into your home.

Wear comfortable clothes: Tight trousers, restricting tops and flipflops are not the best attire for moving home. Wear something comfortable and flexible. Consider the weather when choosing what to wear, and make sure you have a coat in easy reach. Trainers are recommended.

Change the locks: From all the articles you might read online. One piece of advice I never read is: change the locks. This is so important when moving into a new property. All the emotions that you feel when moving house, feeling unsafe isn’t usually one of them. It can be a job that you forget to do, especially when there is so much renovating and moving to do. Call a professional locksmith and get it out the way on the first day.

Celebrate: Don’t forget to enjoy it!
