Build a better email list to selling art

If you’re an old hand at selling art online or just starting out, there is tonnes of advice out there on the best, slickest and easiest way of doing it.

But, more importantly, having your own audience, a go-to-base or platform of followers is critical to any artist or designer who wants to tap into and sell to a ready online market.

Here’s 5 surefire steps to getting your foundation created and an email base from which to sell your art.

Take time

Patience, effort and time is needed to build a social network of followers. This is not just ‘likes’ on facebook, but solid living people who want to spend their money on your art. So start asking for email addresses. It’s free and doesn’t hurt.

Seek them out

Face to face is a surefire winner. So artists must engage more at art shows, exhibits, on the bus or in a studio with the wider public. Simply asking for an email is an ice-breaker, but also a foot-in-the-door in the future to a potential sale. So ask away. They can only say no.

Website? Boom!

Most artists have a website, so you can encourage potential followers and buyers to look at your art in their own time from the ease of their armchair. On the site, ask visitors to sign up for more of your art in the future. Get them hooked.

Build a mailing list

Having a list of followers means you send emails and communicate with them as a group. You can tailor the list to potential buyers, ‘grazers’ and solid buyers. It’s a point of feedback and a good idea who your backers are as against the ‘art enthusiasts but never buy’ crowd.

PR your efforts

The list is also an opportunity to create a two-way street with followers, advising them of where you will be exhibiting, special discounts and dates for new art releases.

Suddenly, that humble email list is a useful tool to spread the word about you.
