How To Become a Better Boss

We all want to be the best versions of ourselves, as often as possible. However, it’s not always possible to bring our ‘A-Game’ and it’s not always possible to have work days full of success and victories. However we should never stop working on ourselves in order to build on our skills and build on the successes of our businesses. For those of you running a business and leading a team of employees, here are our top tips on how to be the best possible boss you can be.

Know When to Step Back

There is nothing more demotivating than a boss who micromanages. A boss who is constantly looking over staffs shoulder creates an atmosphere of distrust which harbours resentment and unhappiness in staff. Therefore it’s essential to know when you need to get involved and when you need to simply step back and let your staff get on with what they are doing.

Coaching for Your Team and You

Coaching and training shouldn’t just be limited to your staff, you should also be focusing on constant training of your own skills and regular coaching to develop your skills as a boss and as a business person. Look for a company, like Yellow Coaching, that specialises in coaching business people how to take their companies to the next level and how to really nurture and look after their team. Regular coaching ensures that you regain and maintain control over your business and that you are continually finding unique and intelligent ways to motivate your staff and keep your team happy and stimulated.

Celebrate Differences & Diversity

Some business owners fear that differences and diversity can signal a team that is difficult to manage and lead. However the best teams are those with members who are different so that they all have something unique to bring to the table. No two people perform the same, nor should they and you as a boss should be encouraging and celebrating the differences in your teams working techniques. Leverage the differences and use them to the benefit of your company and make your staff feel valued by capitalising on their individual skills and talents.

Lead by Example

It is all very well being impressed by the success of your company and looking around and thinking, ‘I created this’. Enjoy those moments, but do not become complacent. You should be digging in just as much as your team, if not more. Your team want to be inspired by a great leader and a great boss and the best way to do that is to lead by example. Being a functional cog in the machine will mean that your team will find you competent, helpful and and an inspiring and supportive company leader.

Understanding Motivation

Not everyone wants the same things or has the same objectives as you do, therefore a great boss is a boss that spends time getting to know the individual motivations and goals of the members of their team. Everyone’s sights are set on different prizes, so make sure you are aware of the different perspectives and ambitions of each team member so you know how to motivate them and reward them appropriately.
