What Does Boosting Traffic To Your Website REALLY Achieve?

Most people that have a website know that they want a lot of traffic to their site. Of course, not everyone knows what a lot of traffic might be in numbers. Is it 100 visitors a day? 10,000? 1,000,000? Having a lot of visitors to your site isn’t necessarily a good thing. For a start, a huge figure like a million hits per day is usually a sign that something is very wrong. You might have been hacked. Your host might shut you down, and then nobody is going to find your site! If you see high numbers and a bad bounce rate, it’s time to address the issues.

Numbers Game?

Of course, if your numbers are only in single or double figures each day, you might be worried that your natural search writing skills aren’t quite there. SEO continues to be an important activity for every website owner. Many hire a good SEO company to solve problems, refine copy, and help each page rank as high as possible for the search terms that are most relevant. Picking the wrong search term can mean your site is never seen.

Quality Over Quantity

But should it be more about quality than quantity? Yes, and no. It depends on your revenue stream. What part of your business is generating the most profit? Is it your website product sales? Or is it ad revenue from places like AdSense? If you’re selling products on your website, then you want each visitor to be a qualified lead ready to buy. A high conversion rate means that your traffic is good quality.

If you’re earning advertising revenue, then chances are you’re looking for high volumes of traffic. Some ads payout just for being seen on your website without the clickthrough. Of course, the real earnings come from clicks. That means the traffic on your site should still be qualified. Visitors should be interested in the ads served up. Some services deliver based on the user browser history rather than the site. It’s all a numbers game though, so higher qualified traffic numbers will see better results financially.

I’m Not Selling Anything!

Not all websites are there to sell. Many are there as PR opportunities. They boost exposure of a personality or a brand. The hard sell comes later or is found somewhere else altogether. If you’re looking to position yourself as an authority voice or influencer, then you definitely need a lot of traffic coming to your website. You also want those visitors to be engaged enough to open communication lines with you through forums and comments. Unfortunately, it’s rare for those to appear in search engine results. Your content still needs to be high quality to rank.

Some websites or pages are set up as part of the sales funnel. They’re an integral part of the customer journey, but there is little to nothing that is salesy within the content. Instead, there is quality information and advice. Useful articles that visitors spend time reading will help your pages rank higher in the search engines. It will also help encourage visitors to come back, subscribe to newsletters, or even agree for you to email them personally.

Once you have an authorised email address, you are free to begin your sales pitch. You might have written a book, developed products or provide services. Your qualified leads continue to visit your website, boosting your power as an influencer. These are the visitors you want to your website – the returning traffic.

Measuring and Analytics

So how do you measure the number of visitors to your website each day? There are several different approaches. The one you use will depend on your business strategy or objectives. You might be keen to boost returning visitor numbers. Cookies allow you to identify these figures and you can use analytics to help clarify the numbers.

Unique or first-time visitors are the ones that have potential to become leads. They’ve arrived at your page from one of a number of sources. These might include search engines, links, or social media promotions. Validate your real traffic by checking the bounce rate. Anyone that leaves the site in under thirty seconds is not likely to come back again or invest in what you’re selling. They haven’t read anything.

If you want to boost traffic to your website, there are several ways to do it. But before you develop any campaigns consider carefully what you want to achieve from those higher numbers. What type of visitors are you really looking to attract?
