3 Things Every Freelancer Should Know Before Starting Out

If you’re tempted to wave goodbye to your full-time job, regular wage and excellent promotion prospects, then some may say you need to think again. Why forego such a steady and secure job? But therein lies the rub. You don’t want steady and secure. You want fast-paced, exciting and potentially lucrative. The idea of heading out into the world of freelancing to try and make a name for yourself is thrilling. However, it’s not all rainbows and sunshine. You need to put in the hours initially and work hard to try to establish yourself in an already competitive field. Take a look at these three things that every potential freelancer should know before they start out.

You Will Have Little Social Life

Whereas before your self-imposed self-employment you were able to take weekend city breaks on occasion, venture out midweek for dinner with pals and have a social calendar more jam-packed than a D-list celebrity, you will find yourself stuck indoors as a freelancer. Initially, your life will become a never-ending cycle of meetings, briefs, deadlines, work and invoice chasing. It can be difficult to see the wood for the trees when you have a deadline looming at 9am Monday morning and you’re working round the clock all weekend to try and complete the work required. You may wonder why on Earth you have chosen this career path at moments like these. However, you need to remember that the initial hard slog will pay off eventually, when you can ease back a little, charge higher rates and begin to refuse work.

Money Can Be Tight

Relinquishing that regular income can be terrifying and venturing into the financial unknown, even more so. However, if you are able to develop contacts quickly and network your way to jobs, you will hopefully be able to keep your cash flow buoyant. Often, the worst thing about being freelance is chasing invoices. People often pay late and think little about the consequences for the freelancer. There are ways you can mitigate running low on cash. Many fast loans online are available should you find that work has dried up or you need a boost to your funds. You can borrow the cash and pay it back in manageable monthly instalments. When work picks up, or you’ve established yourself in your field, you won’t have to rely on income boosters again.

Your Friends Will Think You’re Mad, But They Will Respect You

Head to a dinner party and meet someone who says they are freelance and they are infinitely more interesting than the accountant you are also sitting next to. Being self-employed and venturing out on your own commands a certain level of respect. While your nearest and dearest may think you’re a tad crazy for giving up your career in a corporate setting, they will also respect your choice and admire your determination.

Going freelance is not for the faint-hearted. However, if you have the drive, resilience and courage to continue moving forward with your self-employment dreams, you have every chance of business success.
