The Search For A Meaningful Career

Many people around the world tend to sum up their accomplishments with the job that they have acquired and what they have bought with the money they have earned. But what comes above that truly, is job satisfaction. Do we live to work or work to live? These are very different questions and it is important to understand that having a meaningful career is good for all aspects of our life; not just financially.

A search for meaning in a career

The question of meaning search has a direct connection to the career we choose during our lives. Our professional horizon is crucially affected by our family tree – many of us are engaged in professions directly or closely related to the professions in which their parents or grandparents were engaged. Beyond that, the desire to please the parents leads to many choosing to engage in the field in which their parents wanted for them without themselves wanting it. When a person chooses to engage in a profession to which their parents have directed them – whether because it is convenient/economical/familiar/safe, etc., it has many consequences for his feelings and this can lead to the same existential emptiness if it is not a true passion. It seems easy to fall into and the career is almost ready-made, especially if it is a family business. But if it isn’t what you desire, then you won’t succeed or be happy beyond this.

Let’s say you have desired a career in medicine, you may want to look at how to begin this journey first, you can have a read at cmr.com.au for more information. If this is a true passion, you must work out what you need to succeed – the grades you’ll need and what type of experience. Medicine is a career that truly tests us and can only be entered if you truly have a passion for it. Many times a person chooses a profession only because of the economic temptations or the prestigious image, regardless of their true and deep desire. You can hire a coach, a career coach who will advise you on all areas of your career and see what is best for you. If you’re not academic, there may be other routes to take.  There are apprenticeships and work experience that can lead you on the path you want.

Understand and identify what you want

In order for a career to be meaningful, it must provide you with some type of satisfaction. Do you enjoy working with people? Or is your goal to be able to work from home autonomously? If this is the case, you must write down why you want this and what your clear goals for the future are. Yes, it is simple to fall into a job that pays the rent, so if financial goals are important to you, then you must work out how you will attain these financial goals. Working for you is vital – having a career that is making you happy, is even more important.
