As Business coaches, We’re always getting clients to be happy with their lives. So I have devised and urge everyone to adopt the ‘trio of life’: Be happy, great and purposeful.
Here are the steps to get you on that journey:
Happy life: Pleasures are based on emotion, but are temporary. Increasing positive emotions is possible. Nurture gratitude by writing down three things each day that made you happy. These can measurably increase your level of overall happiness. I was initially sceptical, but it does work.
I am a big fan of savoring the moment. Set aside an hour and go for a walk or do an activity that gives you pleasure. Savour the moment, live it and treasure it.
Great life: This is more satisfying than the happy life as it results from maximizing long-term gratification rather than just focusing on fleeting happiness. Gratification is characterized by absorption, engagement and flow.
The best way to increase gratification is to use your strengths as often as possible in the nine areas of priorities of life. Use a strength such as ‘empathy’ to guide you in a particular activity or period will increase your capacity in this area. Practice the strengths with which you would like more confidence in, and see the results.
Purposeful life: The path to a purposeful life is by using your signature strengths in the service of something larger than yourself, be it your community, loved ones or friends.
