A Beginners Guide to Making Money Online

Around 1 in 4 of us make money online, and this number is only set to rise in the coming years, as more business is done online and greater opportunities to earn appear. Some of these people work permanently online. They don’t have another job, and they work full or part-time hours, every week, on the internet, making money. Others take online jobs to earn extra around a more traditional position. Some earn pocket money. Others make riches. But, one thing that they all have in common is the envy of those around them. You may have been tempted to earn money online yourself, but find that you don’t know where to start. Here’s a brief guide to getting started.

Register as Self-Employed

The first thing that you need to do before you start to earn money online is register as self-employed. Many people fail to do this, assuming that they don’t have to if they also work as an employee, or because they won’t earn enough for it to count. Well, if you earn money for yourself, you need to register, even if you have another job or don’t earn enough to pay tax on your income. Failing to register can mean that you face a fine later, so do it as soon as you can.

Set up a Spreadsheet

At the end of the tax year, you’ll need to start declaring your income and expenses. So, don’t leave it too late. Start recording them all on a simple spreadsheet straight away so that things don’t get confusing later on when you realise you haven’t got a clue how much you earned at the start.

Find Online Work That Suits Your Life

Starting your own online business is fantastic. You could start anything from a consultancy firm to an ecommerce store. But, it’s not for everyone. It’s great because it’s your business, and you’ll have a chance to make a great income. But, it takes a lot of work, and you’ll need to know about more than just your product. It’s certainly not for everyone.

You might prefer working as a freelancer. You’ll have to find new clients and jobs regularly, but, you’ll do your work and then switch off. You won’t need to be involved in all areas of business. Freelancing as a Content Copywriter or graphic designer can give you much greater flexibility.

Find Something that You Enjoy

When you work online, you need to be disciplined. There’s no one to tell you what to do or manage your time. You need to do it yourself. So, it’s important that you find something that you enjoy doing and feel passionate about.

Build a Portfolio

Whether you want to start a store selling your own products, write your own blog, or find work as a freelance writer, you need a portfolio. When you start out, you’ve got no experience, you don’t have a significant online presence, and you need something to impress clients and customers with. Build a portfolio of work samples and treat it like your online CV.
